Have you seen vehicle inspection called Shaken-sho in a car?

It is obligated to possess it when you drive public roads here in Japan.

What is shaken-sho?

Shaken-sho is a blue or green paper that proves the car is safe and sure to drive. Blue Shaken-sho is for bigger cars and green Shaken-sho is for smaller cars. Every information in detail like owner, user, the address of them or first year of registration are written in it too. The owner need to update Shaken-sho every 2 years. When you update it, the car need to pass some tests. For example, the size of car, amount of engine oil or groove of each tire etc. It is said that by 2022 Shaken-sho will be digitalize from paper to card.

Used cars with Shaken-sho

When you buy a new car from dealer, Shaken-sho is already with the new car. However when you buy a used car, it is not always fully included because the previous owner may have sell his/her car when shaken-sho is almost expired. So when you buy a used car, you need to check how long the shaken-sho is available. It costs money to update Shaken-sho, so it is also important to check it.
