超絶クォリティーのスポコンレースゲームとして、世界的ヒットを遂げた『NFSUG』シリーズ。しかし元祖となる『ニード･フォー･スピード(以下。NFS)』シリーズは、およそ10年近い歴史を持つ。

『NFS』シリーズは、当初から実車収録と公道レースに拘った内容で、一般車も走る公道でスーパーカーを200マイルで駆る、という血の気の多い内容を連綿と作り続けてきた。ここで詳しく解説しておくと、自動車メーカー許諾の元、実車収録されたクルマが登場するゲームにおいて、"一般車も混走する公道を走る"、"一般車との衝突表現がある"、"パトカーに追われる"といった要素は絶対にタブーだ。しかしなぜか『NFS』はむしろそれをウリにしてシリーズを重ねており、その"公道レース"コンセプトはストリート発信のカルチャーである"スポーツコンパクト"と絶妙の相性を見せ、見事『NFSUG』シリーズ誕生と相成ったわけだ。

『NFSUG』の大ヒット後、他社から沢山のスポコンレースゲームが発売されたが、『NFSUG』のブランド力を崩すに至らず、さらに圧倒的なボリュームを持つ『NFSUG2』の登場で完全にレースゲーム史上は『NFSUG』シリーズに制圧された。
また『NFSUG2』は、カスタムカー･カルチャーが新たな潮流に流れているのを見逃さず、スポコンに加えラグジュアリーSUVカスタムもしっかりフォロー。ゲーム中にハマーH2、キャディラック･エスカレード等を数々のカスタムパーツと共に収録している。

この度日本限定発売で登場した『NFSUG2車道』は、『NFSUG2』の廉価版であるが、その内容には多くの追加要素がある。サブタイトルにもなっている『車道』とは、ゲーム中にバイナルグラフィックのデザインを提供しているアートファクトリーが展開している新機軸のグラフィックの名前であり、ゲーム中にもこの『車道』グラフィックが収録されている。また新規ミッションが追加される等、廉価版でありながら追加要素があるという嬉しい仕様になっている。
『NFSUG』シリーズはここで一旦打ち止めとなるが、年内には新機軸となる『NFS』シリーズ最新作、『ニード･フォー･スピード･モスト･ウォンテッド』が発売を控えている。これはタイトル通り、ポリスとのチェイスをメインに据えたますます危険なニオイを感じる新シリーズで、PS2やゲームキューブ等の既存ハードの他、次世代マシンであるXBOX360での発売が決定している。圧倒的なグラフィック描画能力を誇るXBOX360で、どんな『NFS』ワールドが展開されるのか今から期待したい！
