全世界で圧倒的に売れているこのレースゲームを知っているか!?

日本でレースゲームと言えば、まず『グランツーリスモ(以下、GT)』の名が挙がる。"ゲーム"ではなく"シミュレータ"として内容を研磨した『GT』シリーズは、そのマニアックなディティールがゲームファンだけでなくいわゆるエンスー層にまでもウケ、大きなヒットを記録しているのは皆さんご存じの通り。
しかし、世界的なゲームマーケットにおいて、『GT』シリーズよりビッグヒットを記録しているレースゲームがあるのを皆さんご存じだろうか。それが今回紹介する『ニード･フォー･スピード･アンダーグラウンド(以下、NFSUG)』だ。

『NFSUG』シリーズがそんなにビッグヒットを記録したのには、理由がある。それはゲームのコンセプトが"スポーツコンパクト"を軸にしているからだ。日本的チューニング文化の北米西海岸的解釈であるこの"スポコン"カルチャーは、映画『ワイルドスピード』のヒットもあって全米、そして全世界へと波及。この日本でも逆輸入カルチャーとして飛び火してきたほどで、この勢いもあって『NFSUG』はビッグヒットを記録したのだ。
しかしただブームに乗じた作品がヒットするほど世界のゲームマーケットは甘くない。『NFSUG』シリーズは世間のカスタムカー･カルチャーを見据えた絶妙な先取り感に加え、圧倒的な内容の作り込みが多くのユーザーから支持を得たのだ。『NFSUG』はレースゲームとしての"走り"の要素に加え、"カスタム"という部分も圧倒的に充実させた。クルマに対するカスタム可能箇所は数十箇所に及び、全カスタムパーツの組み合わせは数億通りとなるほど。つまり掛け値なしに、"自分だけの1台"をゲーム中にメイクする事が可能なのだ。もちろんこんなレベルでゲーム中のクルマをカスタムできるゲームはいままで他になかったし、現在も本シリーズをおいて他にない。
